Download All Your Tweets and Information on Twitter

Twitter... Don't you talk about it? I can see conversations about Twitter everywhere and seems like it's a trending topic lately among my friends as I can see my friends talking more about it at the time I write this post. +Lisa Buben has invested her time to research and compile materials to publish an eBook for Twitter folks to get started and tweet better, and +Adrienne Smith shared her cool Twitter tips to take advantage of Twitter. Now you don't wanna miss them ;) If you are a Twitter user, I have a fun question for you. What if your Twitter account get hacked?

Online Data Security

Have you been thinking about the security of your data stored in Social Media accounts? Mmm... You might be in danger, but you never know until you get hacked or find your data has been lost.

Facebook is a social platform where we find a lot of spammy activities going on eventhough you never notice after all. But friends do and may let you know about unwanted content being shared by your account. Facebook let you secure your account to prevent end up being hacked, or if you feel you get hacked after all. Before all that, you can download all your information stored on Facebook. Didn't you? Download right now and keep it safe.

How about Google+? As Google+ is associated with your Google account you can backup your data as follows... Oh wait... +Jan Bierens will let you know why and how to backup your data on Google.

Oops... I was way away from the topic today - Twitter? No, I'm in, but reminding you about security concerns on other online profiles.

Twitter Backup

I'm asking you again ~ What if your Twitter account get hacked?. It's always better you get away from spammers on Twitter. Don't let them come in and mess up with your Twitter profile. The idiom always comes into play, "Prevention is better than cure". Wouldn't you love if you can backup your Twitter profile?

There are numerous third-party tools that let you backup all your tweets. I didn't know about it until coming across a post directly shared by +Frank Woodman Jr back then with list of third-party Twitter backup tools. I've found some reliability issues when I try to use them with my profile, but they were working for some other tweeps though.

But now you don't need any third-party tools if you are looking for backing up your tweets. Twitter allows you to download all your tweets and retweets. However it's all about backing up your data and Twitter has no capability to restore you backups though.

Twitter archive is not only about downloading and keeping it in a safe place. You can make use of it anytime. You can navigate through all your tweets month by month, and best of all, you can search all the tweets of yours related to a specific term. When it comes to usual Twitter profile, I find it's hard to get listed all tweets of mine for a specific search term even in Twitter advanced search. That's a cool feature from my point of view. How about you? ;) In addition to searching and accessing tweets, you can view your account details and interact with your old tweets like you do online. Just wait... Let's talk about it all with the steps ;) Shall we?

Steps:

1. Log in to your Twitter account.

2. Jump to Twitter Account Settings page.

3. Scroll down and find Your Twitter archive option.

4. Now click Request your archive button to request your Twitter archive.

5. You will get a pop up box confirming your request is successful.

6. Now you will be asked to enter your Twitter password. Enter your password and click Save changes.

7. You will get an email to email address associate with your Twitter account. Open the email and click Go now.

Note: If you don't see email from Twitter, it may yet processing. Check your inbox again in few minutes. If it's not there yet, go to Twitter Account Settings and click Resend email button.

8. You will be directed to your Twitter account again. Click Download button to start downloading your archive. It will be downloaded in zip file format.

9. Now extract your downloaded archive and click Index.html file to view all your tweets and information offline.

More Information:

* You can navigate through all your tweets in offline archive, month by month.

* Use View account details option to view information of your Twitter account in offline archive.

As you can see, you will find your Twitter username, user ID, description, location, number of tweets and when did you join Twitter.

Enjoy :-)

Awesome! Thanks for coming by and taking your time to read this post :) I hope you have learnt something today. Now you can share it with your friends and I'd love to hear from you too.

Loved this info Mayura!

Honestly speaking, I never ever gave it a second thought that even my Twitter profile could be hacked. Yes, one thinks of Facebook because of the images or family pictures you might be sharing, but to think of all that you mentioned makes me rethink again!

I liked the way you explained every step to get it all done. Just as you mentioned, it must be easier to navigate through all our tweets month by month, or search all the tweets related to a specific term. But once you archive it, you would need to repeat the process or keep archiving it to update your account I feel - isn't it?

Oh yes...I did read Lisa's post and her eBook too, and Adrienne does share so much about how we can get better with Twitter. I guess with all you people, it becomes so much easier for us to learn about these things. Thank YOU to each one of you. :)

Thanks for sharing this with us. :)

Thank you once again Mayura.

Never thought about backing up my Twitter account. I had an account for years, but just used it to tweet blogs I read. Adrienne had explained to me the importance of Twitter and introduced me to Triberr. So I started to actively use my Twitter account for the last 3 months.
Hmmm so now another platform to protect from spammers. I didn't give it a thought until you pointed this out.

But, no worries you have given me that step by step process to fix that problem. Ahhh another to-do! But of course, I greatly appreciate it Mayura.
Thanks once again,
Donna

Hi Mayura,

Great idea shared from Tech University!

I have never given an iota of thought of keeping the backup of social media site like twitter and facebook? But the way you have explained will surely come in handy. My Question - IS it possible to restore the backup if I loose data on twitter?I really don't know whether this question makes a sense?

Thanks a lot for the insights.

Mayura, this is so cool. I got to the request your archive and got this message "You recently requested a download. Please wait a little while before requesting another one." and nothing else came after it? Maybe it will take some time to download, I do have over 44,000 tweets :) I can't wait to see it! Thanks for sharing and for the mention too.

hI brother..

i have seen it on my account but i am so lazy that i didn't try to do that, but after your post i think i must do it, before it is too late to react. thanks for the post.

Hi Mayura,

Thanks for telling us about this feature. When I first joined twitter my account was hacked in the second day. When I attempted to login I received a message that my account was hacked. I had to create a new account but thankfully since I was so new to Twitter I hadn't put anything in my profile or tweeted anything so whoever hacked into my account didn't get anything out of it ;)

I'm going to go in a request my archive with the steps you've provided it will definitely make it easier for me or anyone else who may be a new Tweep, I love that term :)

And I agree about Lisa and Adrienne, these are two Ladies you want to follow! Have a great week :)

Hi Harleena,

I used to think "Why would we need it after all?" too dear :) It's just bunch of texts and as you implied, unlike Facebook, we have no very personal data to keep away from everyone. But we need to ask ourselves, whether we need it or just ignore and move on :)

When you download your archive you would see how easy it is to navigate Harleena :) I was exhilarated of the fact as we can find our old tweets but none of others. The post link shared by Frank was hidden under my tweets long ago and I couldn't find on online Twitter profile, but via archive :)

You are right :) We need to keep backing up as it keeps updating dear. You can delete your older archive and keep the latest one with you.

I wanted to add Lisa's and Adrienne's posts as they relates to Twitter and I've found very helpful tips there. I'm sure you are enriched with all of 'em Harleena :) Of course, with no knowledge being shared, we'd see no progress in ourselves in every aspect.

Thanks for coming by and adding more value to the topic as always through your views and thoughts Harleena :)

Hi Donna,

I remember you have been bookmarking posts about Twitter as you wanna build your authority there as well dear :) I'm really glad you are now much familiar with it after 3 months and I'm sure you will rock it as you do on Google+ and Facebook. We learn and apply, nah? ;)

You'd love it Donna :) Download your archive and see how useful it could be. We might never know when it can be hacked as there were incidents with loss of data.

Now you are the techie Donna ;) You can do it easily and keep it in a safe place. Ha ha... It's just few clicks dear ;) May be you already did, eh?

Thanks for coming over and contributing to the conversation with your thoughts and experience Donna :)

Hi Sapna,

Ha ha... You and Donna always remind me of the University ;)

Of course, it makes sense Sapna. Well, the backups are just to keep with us dear :) It doesn't allow us to restore back though. You can download both archives on Facebook and Twitter, and keep it with you in case you need it.

I hope you will download both of your archives and as you can go through after downloading, you'd find some uses there ;)

Thanks for coming by and adding your thoughts with a useful question Sapna :)

Hi Lisa,

No dear, nothing comes after and you just need to wait for the email. Ha ha... Be patient ;)

44K is not a small number. Gosh you tweet that much? ;) I have a long way to go to come with such a number.

The archive may take some time to process but the size won't be a exceed 50 Megabytes as I think. Anyway I hope you already got that :)

Thanks for coming by and contributing your thoughts on this topic Lisa :)

Hi Corina,

Here's the one you were awaiting for dear ;) Ha ha... Now you already have your archive I guess.

I'm sorry about being hacked on very first days (AND no worries at all by now, nah? ;)) and glad it wasn't issue at all for you. Ha... So you know why you need to secure your account. Always try to keep away from spammers Corina as it's easy for 'em to initiate by following you in first place.

Term applies for you as you are a tweepie too ;) I hope you will enjoy going through your Twitter archive and see what you have been tweeting since first day.

They are always add the value and glad we all are connected. Isn't it Corina? ;)

Hello Mayura, nice post my friend, had that feature been there all this time or did they just add it?

It's good to be able to store the data from your Twitter account but maybe I miss it in this post were it shows you have to recover and restore your data if you ever get hack.

I been lucky so far but at least we have options now. Thanks so much for the great tips Mayura always helpful.

This is so funny Mayura because when I wrote my post on using Twitter to your advantage, and thank you for mentioning that one by the way, I wanted to go back and read the first few tweets that I had ever done. I found the download archive feature and downloaded all my tweets. I had a really good laugh going back through my first tweets even up to the first year. I was so pathetic back then. Yikes!

This is a great tutorial and had I not been in search of those I wouldn't have known you could even do this. It's really kind of fun too. You'll definitely see how far you've come.

Great share Mayura and again, thank you so much for the mention. I really appreciate that.

Mayura - Another great post from you, it is cool how you get in detail about the process and explain so that it can be easily understood.

I have never archived my twitter account and I think it is a good find and I will definitely try and do it every so often.

I read Lisa's eBook and it is just great, Adrienne of course has something for us with every post of hers. They are so motivating and full of information and you are nothing less.

Thanks again.

Hi Mayura,

Wow, that's a great post, Mayura. I had no idea that we could back up our twitter account and I didn't know it can be hacked. This is something for sure no one would like to run into or even think about.

I'll have to look into that and get my backup data better than being sorry at the end. This is a great feature by Twitter.

Thanks for this great information as always, Mayura!

Be Blessed,

Hey Mayura

That's really cool. I never even noticed that you could download all your Tweets before.

I'm not sure I want to see the one's I wrote when I first signed up!

It's a shame that Twitter don't have a away to restore them.

Hi Adrienne,

lol :D It's for everyone's advantage and I think it worth mentioning dear. As I said there, I see folks doing same mistakes over and over, so hope it helps them to do it right.

Glad to hear you had it and explored your older tweets Adrienne :) I think most of us can relate to you. I couldn't help laughing either :D Gosh... We have been through a lot and learnt through mistakes.

Ha ha... I hope you will have some laugh mate ;) Get yours and see how it can be used. I've found many valuable tweets hidden beneath all of my tweets :)

Wow...I've learned something from you, Maruya. I just did that. I didn't know I could archive my twitter. You know my 1st twitter got hacked and that's when I just started blogging...I mean who would wanna hack a newbie who only have 576-something followers, right? Yup, they hacked me!!! but I caught it right away. He posted a couple of stupid vulgar posts and I was saying..."what the heck."

And so anyway, during that day, there was about 250,000 twitter accounts hacked and guess twitter had to turn OFF their stuff to STOP the hacker!! and so thank you so much for this post. I tweeted this...have a nice weekend!!!!

Mayura De Silva said...

Hi Angela,

Whoops... Sorry about your account getting hacked dear.

Sometimes they don't care who you are but trying to hurt the platform. Users become victims automatically.

What we can do is care safety and aware of who we follow and especially, followed by. If you are followed by a suspicious tweep, you better report that user, so Twitter will review 'em and remove if needed.

BTW I'm a newbie than you are then as my follower count right now is nearly 300 :D lol...

I hope you had yours and saved in your hard drive :)

Thanks for coming over and contributing to the conversation with your experiences Angela :)

Hi Mayura, This is very cool! I had no idea that I could archive my tweets and look at their analytics. Perhaps someday Twitter will have a way of restoring them, but for now, this is a very useful tool. Thanks for sharing this.

Hi Carolyn,

Pretty cool indeed :) Yippy, Now you know. First it was Facebook, then Google and now Twitter to go with a backup.

I had the feeling why no one allows users to restore any of backups. Hmm... There are security concerns and users can misuse it to 'cause problems. So far, I think backup is a very good option for users :)

Thanks for coming by and adding your thoughts on Twitter backup feature Carolyn :)
